National Preparedness Month

Emergency preparedness is not only the concern of earthquake-prone Californians or those who live in the part of the country known as "Tornado Alley."  Preparedness is an important job for all of us, both for natural and man-made disasters.  Knowing what you should do in an emergency may make all the difference when something happens and quick decisions count.

An important first step in preparing for disaster is to learn what potential emergencies could impact you and your community.  Take time to learn more about the potential emergencies that could happen where you live and the appropriate way to respond to them.  One good way to learn about these potential emergencies is to reflect on what kinds of disasters have affected your community in the past.  If your community has experienced a flood or a tornado or a hurricane in the past, it could happen again.  General disaster preparedness, however, is applicable to ANY emergency you could face.

In addition, learn about the emergency plans that have been established in your area by your state and local government.
