This portion of our site is devoted to the resources used by our national network of LDR coordinators. Groups are more than welcome to use any of the resources provided here for training in preparing for and responding to disasters. For information regarding disaster trainings in your area, contact a local LDR affiliate organization.

Travels of Aunt Ellen is a tool for helping children deal with the aftermath of a disaster. A coloring book with Scripture and object lessons. Topics discussed are the bombing in Okalahoma City, tornadoes, and floods/hurricanes. Floods/hurricanes is available in Spanish.  [Download]
 


The Disaster Response Database was created to gather and track information needed by an agency or faith organization for their response efforts. This tool provides a way to use limited resources wisely through the coordinated use of volunteers for construction, creating work orders for construction needs, identifying needs and priorities through case management, as well as managing other aspects of a recovery effort.

The components of the Disaster Response Database include case management, financial info, rebuilding, volunteer management, donations and equipment loaning. Based on experience and lessons learned during the response to the Grand Forks North Dakota Red River Valley flooding of 1997, this comprehensive tool provides an agency with the ability record vital data as soon as the response begins.

Designed to be user-friendly and easy to use even for those uncomfortable with computers, all forms needed are included for quick branding changes. Uses Microsoft® Office Professional 2003 - ACCESS and can be used on individual computers or networked. Interfaces with CRWRC's Needs Assessment Database.

The Hardship Grants Database assists in distributing hardship grants. Complete with templates of letter to pastors, application cover letter, application, award letter, and suggested scale for disbursements. Collects name, address, congregation, vulnerability factors, dependents and dates and amounts awarded. Click and go reporting.

The LDR Volunteer Toolkit is a resource for SMOs and volunteer coordinators. This resource outlines the effective recruitment and employment of volunteers in a disaster recovery effort. For those SMOs with extensive experience in doing this sort of work, the toolkit will serve as a helpful refresher in best practices. For those who might be doing disaster response work for the first time, this resource provides a helpful outline for appropriately styling a response.  [Download]
 


The LDR Coordinators Handbook speaks to LDR coordinators. It presents details to help coordinators serve as the overall agents, organizing response by Lutherans to disasters. Selected by LDR with endorsement of the judicatories, coordinators are often staff of one of the Lutheran social ministry organizations serving the region designated.

Knowledge, skills and experience related to disasters will build the coordinator’s ability to serve. LDR conducts training on a regular basis. Coordinators may also consider training offered through the American Red Cross and other organizations in his/her area.

The LDR Coordinators Training Manual is developed to prepare the Lutheran community to meet the mission and goal as part of an interfaith response to disaster. The primary audience is disaster coordinators, those who work on behalf of LDR to oversee all activities but disaster workers of all kinds will benefit from learning the information.

While LDR helps people in very practical ways to meet physical needs, its representatives bring to survivors the hope and strength of the Gospel through pastoral care and counseling services.

Preparing for Disaster - A Guide for Lutheran Congregations LDR helps congregations be effective and important participants in their communities’ recovery from disaster.

As part of the community, congregations have opportunity and responsibility to respond to disaster. The deep human needs and psychological scars left after a disaster require care beyond the restoration of physical needs. Putting lives back together after a disaster requires care, hope and love. Counseling, understanding and direction enable people to cope with their anger, guilt, tests of faith, loneliness and turmoil.

A time of crisis is often the best time for Christians to demonstrate the reality of God’s healing grace through caring and sharing. This manual is provided to assist congregations prepare for disaster. It asks questions such as:

     What is a disaster?
     Is your facility ready?
     Are your church record protected?
     Does your congregation have evacuation plans?
     What can your congregation do to prepare to care for members of your community in response to disaster?
