Recovery from Hurricane Katrina

The work here is focused mostly on repairing and rebuilding damaged homes.  Groups with one-quarter or more skilled individuals (those that can lead others on worksites) are needed.  The most common jobs include hanging, taping, and painting drywall and carpentry trim work.  The minimum age at all work sites is 16.

Camp Victor, in Ocean Springs, is currently accepting up to 220 volunteers each week.  The housing facility is a converted warehouse with dormitory-style bunk bed sleeping quarters.  The facility is fully air conditioned and heated, and there are shower facilities, a large kitchen, and a large dining room space.  There are also a limited number of RV hookup spots, located about 15 miles from camp, available as needed.

Camp Biloxi is currently accepting up to 132 volunteers each week.  Volunteers are housed in converted trailers with A/C and heating.  There is overflow room for an additional 60 volunteers in a large tent with bunk beds.  The facility also includes a shower trailer and a large mess tent.  There are also 6 RV hookup spots available on site.

Camp Coast Care, a ministry of Lutheran Episcopal Services in Mississippi, is accepting volunteers at their site in Long Beach.  Please contact Michael Magargel, volunteer coordinator, for more information at 228-234-5193.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has four Volunteer Villages in Mississippi -- Gautier, D'Iberville, Orange Grove, and Pearlington.  Volunteers are asked to call the PDA Call Center at 866-732-6121 for more information.
