Volunteer Needs - Louisiana

The work here is focused mostly on repairing and rebuilding damaged homes.  Groups with one-quarter or more skilled individuals (those that can lead others on worksites) are needed.  The most common jobs include hanging, taping, and painting drywall and carpentry trim work.  The minimum age at all work sites is 16.  For more information, contact Jessica Vermilyea at 504-376-9121, or by e-mail at jessica.vermilyea@lsss.org

Housing information:

A number of Lutheran congregations in the Greater New Orleans area have opened their doors to volunteer teams in need of housing.  Information about where housing is available, what is provided, who to contact, etc. is available through the ELCA's Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod at www.futurewithhope.org.

Camp Restore is an associated site of Recovery Assistance, Inc., a ministry of the LCMS Southern District.  The camp provides housing and meals for volunteers, and asks for a donation of $125 per volunteer per week.  For more information, call 888.248.2636 or visit them on the Web at www.camprestore.org.

There is a Lutheran hurricane recovery effort in Houma, LA, (about an hour south of New Orleans) where major flooding from Hurricane Rita caused problems for the Bayou community.  For more information, send an e-mail to bayougrace@yahoo.com.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has two Volunteer Villages in Louisiana -- Luling and Houma.  Volunteers are asked to call the PDA Call Center at 866-732-6121 for more information.
